Bright Morning at the Watering Hole

Sunlight spills over the tall grass as a wide-eyed giraffe tilts her head and keeps watch. Three zebras drink quietly, dipping their noses into the cool, wavy water. Each one’s stripes make bold patterns and their ears stand up, listening for sounds around them. Up front, a happy hippopotamus peeks out of the pond, his round face beaming with a big, friendly grin.

Gentle ripples surround the hippo as he sits in his favorite spot, soaking up the morning breeze. Hippos have enormous mouths and can open their jaws incredibly wide, sometimes up to 150 degrees or almost 4 feet (1.2 meters) across!
