Ogre By the Little Window

A big ogre man creeps up to a tiny cottage window, his eyes round and curious. He lifts one hand like a paw, ready to tap the sill. His pointy ear sticks out, and his mouth hangs open in a small oh, as if he hears a whisper inside. Wooden boards, neat window frames, and strong lines make everything clear and bold.

The roof wears neat shingles like fish scales, and the wall rests on chunky stones. A small tuft of grass pokes up by his elbow, showing he tiptoed through the yard. Four window panes shine with simple streaks, waiting for bright colors. He leans forward, careful and gentle, trying not to bump the house with his big shoulders.

Fun Fact!

Another of Charles Perrault's stories, "Tom Thumb," features a child-eating ogre who owns magical seven-league boots.

  2. 2 Color roof shingles in a pattern: every other tile a different warm brown.
  3. 3 Dot and swirl grays on the stones to make them look bumpy and round.
  4. 4 Add a soft yellow glow in the window panes, then a hint of blue for glass shine.
