Burrow Builder Wombat Paw

A shaggy wombat leg fills the page, fur drawn in quick dashes. She presses her heavy paw into the ground, and curved claws scoop the soil. Pebbles hop like tiny popcorn, and dust sprays up in little arcs. The lines show the big push as she starts her tunnel.

Tufts crowd around each toe, leaving roomy spaces to shade and blend. Rocks sit at the bottom like crunchy buttons to dot with specks. Smooth claw shapes love bright highlights, while the scratchy fur lines like short, quick strokes. Color the ground warm and stony, and make her paw look ready to dig again.

Fun Fact!

A wombat will often have a favorite scratching post, like a log or a rock, within its territory.

Coloring Tips

  1. 1 Layer two browns on the fur: light first, then darker on the short dash lines.
  2. 2 Leave a tiny white shine on each claw to make them look smooth and strong.
  3. 3 Speckle the ground with tan and gray dots to turn lumps into pebbles.
  4. 4 Color strokes in the same direction as the fur to keep it fluffy.
