Nap Time on the Savannah Stripes

Mama zebra stands watch in the tall grass, ears pricked like little triangles. Her mane sticks up in tidy spikes, and bold bands wrap her neck, belly, and legs. A long tail hangs in a soft curve while her hooves plant firmly in the ground.

Beside her, a sleepy foal curls into a stripey ball. He tucks his nose near his knees, eyes closed, legs folded neat and small. Short fuzz runs along his back, and his tiny bands bend around his round belly. Small clumps of grass dot the ground, leaving wide open space for sky and sunshine.

Fun Fact!

Ears pointed forward on a zebra usually mean it's feeling calm or friendly.

Coloring Tips

  1. 1 Leave bright white gaps between black stripes; add light gray shadows on bellies and legs.
  2. 2 Give the foal playful rainbow stripes, then keep Mama classic for contrast.
  3. 3 Blend yellow and green for the grass; dot tiny purple flowers around their feet.
  4. 4 Fade a pale blue wash behind them for an easy sky that makes the zebras pop.
